Abstract

This chapter explores the phenomenon of peasants becoming industrial workers in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. They were a distinctive socioeconomic category that bridged the gap between agrarian and indus-trial society. In an economy primarily based on agriculture, characterized by small landholdings, low productivity and agrarian overpopulation, many peasants were forced to seek additional income through industrial labor. This chapter aims to identify and analyze the main characteristics of peasant workers by examining the professional structure of the population, their classif ication, the causes of their emergence, their scale and presence in industry, and their economic position and status. The study shows that peasant workers constituted a signif icant portion of the industrial labor force.
