Abstract

The paper explores the history of a Yugoslav international children’s camp named the International Children’s Friendship Meeting (Međunarodni susret prijateljstva dece, MSPD) (1976–1988), aiming to trace the role of the social organisation of children in the implementation of socialist Yugoslavia’s overall international cooperation. It also highlights the role of Yugoslav children’s camps in the official education and child rearing policy, which, building on the ideas of antifascism, coexistence, internationalism and solidarity among peoples, promoted socialist peace education. The paper is largely based on reports from thirteen Yugoslav international children’s camps, drawing attention to the practices of building peace education in the interwar period, the importance of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), the influence of the Yugoslav Pioneer Camp Sutjeska and the Children’s International Summer Village (CISV) on MSPD and its development by analysing all aspects of the organisation and implementation of the programme
