Abstract
The paper re-examines the historiographical picture of the leading Serbian communist politician Aleksandar Ranković in the context of his alleged anti-Albanian policies. Based on archival sources and relevant literature, the article tries to establish if there is truth in the generally accepted perception by examining several instances of alleged abuses of the secret police against the Albanians. The general situation of the Kosovo Albanians is examined in order to elucidate the reasons for their discontent that led to police surveillance. Finally, the role/guilt of Aleksandar Ranković is assessed within the communist power structure.
