Abstract

From early 1985 to the end of 1991, the Soviet Union underwent an avalanche of changes that radically transformed the Soviet system. Nevertheless, the outcome of the process was fatal, since the “patient” did not survive the treatment. Although Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev and his reform program were met with fierce opposition from the com munist elites worldwide,¹ the East European regimes shared the fate of their tutor.
