Shortly after the October Revolution of 1917 in Russia, somewhere in the new Soviet periphery, a group of settlers established a commune that was to become a birthplace of communism and named it Chevengur. Starting a new life in the jointly achieved future, they declared “the end of the entire world’s history” and promoted eternity and infinity as communal founding ideals. This is the briefest summary of Andrei Platonov’s novel Chevengur. Written in 1929, his intriguing work has never received wide public attention in the first country of socialism and for decades remained unknown to readers outside the Soviet Union....
