Abstract

The article presents the 2012 dismissal of Sreten Ugričić from the position of director of the National Library of Serbia as one of the three key events that influenced the failure of the process of dealing with the past in Serbia (in addition to the 2003 assassination of Prime Minister Zoran Đinđic and the commemoration of the centenary of the beginning of WWI). It analyzes how denial and distortion of historical facts and legitimization of war criminals replaced critical historical interpretations. The focus is on Ugričić's critical pondering of Serbia's role in the wars of the 1990s.
