Abstract
This article offers a survey of the main currents in South East Europe in regard to the war aims of the belligerents from 1914. Some war aims had deep roots in the pre-war years. The author puts emphasis on the emerging Yugoslav state in the Balkans. The Serbs and Yugoslavs, while pursuing their own goals, found themselves frequently at odds with the interests and perceptions of their allies as well as their foes. The attempts of both the Central Powers and the Entente to win support of the neutral countries by promising them territorial gains are highlighted. In addition, the local ambitions are laid out.
